Silica Sand

A lot of domestic pools use silica sand as another alternative. Since sand retains the dirt in the water when passing through the pores that form in the sand (due to its irregular shape), it is an effective element that contributes to the cleaning process. There are disadvantages too - mostly seen through the required maintenance (as sand channels through the pool and is returned without being filtered) as well as its limited capacity for trapping bacteria and microorganisms which can proliferate inside the filter.
